Alta Velocidad (high speed) for everyone
The future of Renfe Operadora's commercial services, Alta Velocidad (high-speed) and Larga Distancia (Long Distance), is going to be in the context of a free market. Faced with the prospects of a growth in demand and a new low-cost model of travel, we have added 30 new high-speed trains to our fleet that will make up the 106 series in addition to having adapted some of our high-speed trains to our Avlo service.
AVE and AVLO S-106
In terms of investment capacity, Renfe's second biggest contract at present is the one entered into with Talgo for the acquisition of 30 AVE (high-speed) and AVLO 106 series trains, with an investment worth 786 million euros.
The 106 series train is a particularly high-capacity train that carries more than 500 passengers and almost 600 in AVLO format. Its design is an example of energy efficiency: They have a 3.2-metre-wide interior with five seats per row, which considerably increases the number of passengers per journey without reducing comfort.
The S-106, which places Renfe at the forefront of high-speed rail worldwide, consists of 11 carriages, two of them for Premium class; it is renowned for being lightweight, weighing 30% less than a standard train.
High-Speed and Transformation S-107 engines
Renfe has also entered into a contract with Talgo to purchase 26 towing vehicles for high-speed trains, worth 204 million euros. These towing vehicles will allow Renfe to form AVE (high-speed) trains with the Talgo carriages compositions transformed into what will be Renfe's new 107 series.
The agreement includes the supply and comprehensive maintenance of the 26 towing vehicles, as well as their integration and coupling with the compositions of transformed carriages, to form AVE (high-speed) trains with a variable gauge, dual voltage and maximum speed of 330 km/h, with the option of acquiring up to 14 additional engines.
Talgo is also responsible for the transformation of the train hotels into the new 107 series. The agreement, worth 103 million euros, includes the comprehensive maintenance of 13 transformed carriage compositions, with the option of 6 further carriage compositions.
Renfe reserves the right, for the entire duration of the maintenance contract, to perform the so-called "second-level interventions", both on the towing vehicles and carriages.
Refurbishment S-130/S-730
Renfe, in collaboration with Talgo, is performing extensive refurbishments on 14 Alvia Series 730 trains and 30 S-130 trains. These trains will operate on the Extremadura High Performance Line and other Alta Velocidad (high-speed) lines. The total investment for this comprehensive restoration of 44 trains is 35 million euros.
