We are backed by more than eight decades of experience in the mobility and transport sector with metropolitan, intercity and logistics services. We are experts in railway operations, systems, maintenance and safety, and have a comprehensive train service portfolio that features the world's leading manufacturers.
The growth of cities and the expansion of long and very long distance services through high-speed operations – we have been operating one of the most important and modern networks in the world for more than 30 years – position Renfe Operadora as a key partner to face the challenges of metropolitan and interurban mobility of the 21st century.
We have been an industrial and innovation engine in Spain and in the sector and we continue to drive its growth. With the ongoing renewal of the equipment fleet, the most ambitious in our history, we are committed to the latest generation of public service and high-speed trains and locomotives for freight service. Lighter, more efficient and cleaner trains, which are complemented by an innovation plan that addresses the challenges and opportunities of digitalisation with a holistic view of our operation cycle and service offer.
We are the first end consumer of renewable electricity with a guaranteed source and zero CO2 emissions in Spain, which has led us to obtain the AENOR Carbon Neutral Certification for our electric passenger and freight trains. We are ready to become the benchmark in the new scenario, as established in the EU's latest environmental taxonomy.
Moreover, we are present on several continents developing operational and consulting projects as major players in mobility and conventional and high-speed rail transport. Saudi Arabia, the United States, Mexico and the heart of Europe are some of the geographies in which we apply our knowledge to grow, convinced of the strength of railways as the pillar of efficient and sustainable mobility around the world.
In 2012, Renfe-Operadora was set up as the head of a group of companies to face the new framework of liberalisation and opening up to competition in the railway market.
Establishing the Group required the creation of four state-owned companies, whose capital is fully held by Renfe-Operadora, which maintains its legal nature as a Public Business Entity, to which a fifth company was later added: Renfe Viajeros (Renfe Passengers), Renfe Mercancías (Freight), Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento (Engineering and Maintenance), Renfe Alquiler de Material (Rolling Stock Rental) and Renfe Proyectos Internacionales (International Projects).
