The trains of the future

The train is a great ally in the fight against global warming and for more sustainable mobility. The train is a great ally in the fight against global warming and for more sustainable mobility. Not only is it the ideal mode of transport for replacing planes and cars for long-distance travel but, even more importantly, it plays a central role in everyday mobility due to its capacity and efficiency: movement in big cities and the millions of short and mid-distance trips that we make every day for work, study and other routines.

What does the future have in store for... ?

What will the Cercanías (Commuter) train of the immediate future look like?

High capacity: trains with at least 900 seats (100-metre long trains), which is a 20% increase in capacity in comparison with the current fleet of Civia trains (the trains with the highest capacity in the current Cercanías (Commuter) fleet). There will even be some EXTREMELY HIGH-CAPACITY trains that will be 200 metres long, and therefore have double the seats.
Adaptable to changes in occupancy. Both the 100 m and 200 m trains can be added to if necessary, in order to better adapt the service to changing demand at different times or for different destinations.
Accessible. With the latest advances in accessibility and on-board comfort, access for people with reduced mobility with a minimum of 6 ground-level doors, with areas for bicycles, buggies and bulky luggage.
Connected. Trains with complimentary Wi-Fi for passengers. They will be smart trains that can be configured to evolve towards future concepts for more integrated and connected urban mobility.
Low emission rates. The new Cercanías trains will have the latest advances in accessibility and comfort on board, will be accessible to people with reduced mobility and adapted for people with visual or hearing disabilities. They will also include areas for bicycles and buggies, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi for passengers.

Alta Velocidad (high speed) for everyone

The future of Renfe Operadora's commercial services, Alta Velocidad (high-speed) and Larga Distancia (Long Distance), is going to be in the context of a free market. Given the prospects of growth in demand and a new low-cost travel model, we have added 30 new high-speed trains to our fleet that will make up the 106 series and we have adapted some of our AVE trains for our Avlo service.

Avlo

We have remodelled 5 of the 30 trains from the 112 series in the fleet to use them for Avlo – our low-cost, Alta Velocidad (high-speed) service. These trains, which are all one class, do not have a buffet car and have 438 seats with sockets for each of them.

S-106

These trains will make up Renfe's 106 series and will be able to travel at speeds of up to 330 km/h. They will be made up of eleven carriages with a total of 521 seats that will be laid out, depending on the types designed, in rows of 2+2 and 3+2 seats, all able to be turned to face in the direction the train is moving. The capacity of the trains in this series is greater than that of any of the other trains that provide commercial services.

What will Media Distancia (mid-distance) look like?

The same versatility is being sought for Media Distancia (mid-distance) trains. The trains purchased will be electric and hybrid models. The latter will have a generator carriage for traction on non-electrified tracks and are designed to evolve towards environmentally-friendly solutions.

Trains will be adapted to the changes in infrastructure being addressed throughout the network, replacing diesel trains with electric or hybrid ones. The latter will cover the transient periods until the lines are electrified, and will run on electrified and non-electrified sections.

Accessibility and Wi-Fi on board. The new Media Distancia trains will have the latest advances in accessibility and comfort on board, access for people with reduced mobility, with areas for bicycles and pushchairs, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi for passengers. The trains will be able to run at up to 200 km/h on electricity and up to 160 km/h on non-electrified lines, and will have 3 to 5 passenger carriages.
