Intellectual Disability

To communicate with a person with an intellectual disability:

  • Speak to them clearly and slowly using simple language.
  • When they ask, help them to clarify.
  • People with intellectual disabilities need time to think, adopt an understanding and patient attitude towards their difficulties.
  • Don’t lie for no reason.
  • Treat them like adults.
  • Accept them as they are.
  • Avoid stressful situations.
  • Use written material as a reminder of important tasks and/or data.
  • Take into account possible limitations to keeping attention.
  • There is no boundary that defines to what extent or from where a person has limitations.
