To communicate with a person with an intellectual disability:
- Speak to them clearly and slowly using simple language.
- When they ask, help them to clarify.
- People with intellectual disabilities need time to think, adopt an understanding and patient attitude towards their difficulties.
- Don’t lie for no reason.
- Treat them like adults.
- Accept them as they are.
- Avoid stressful situations.
- Use written material as a reminder of important tasks and/or data.
- Take into account possible limitations to keeping attention.
- There is no boundary that defines to what extent or from where a person has limitations.
